Saskatoon, SK - Canpotex has committed to providing $225,000 over five years to support The Salvation Army’s Weekend Investment in Nutrition (WIN) program through its Canpotex Food for Kids initiative. Through the WIN program, qualifying students at Saskatoon schools are provided a weekend hamper to ensure that they have access to proper nutrition in addition to school nutrition programs. This donation will allow The Salvation Army to meet the growing demand of children needing nutrition hampers over the weekend in Saskatoon.
“Many children in our community rely on school nutrition programs throughout the week,” says Lieutenant Angela Kerr of The Salvation Army. “We believe that these set them up for success during the school day. Over the weekend, kids should be able to be kids and should not be concerned about where their next meal will come from. We are immensely grateful for the ongoing support and partnership with Canpotex, which allows us to provide nutritious food to students over the weekend. The WIN supported by the Canpotex Food for Kids initiative, allows The Salvation Army to put food in the hands of over 70 families in our community that are experiencing food insecurity, ensuring that children continually have access to healthy food and snacks.”
“At Canpotex, we contribute to global food security by exporting Saskatchewan potash to overseas farmers worldwide,” says Gord McKenzie, President and CEO of Canpotex. “By supporting the WIN program, we are not only addressing local food insecurity but also reinforcing the importance of proper nutrition for children’s growth and development. Just as potash helps crops thrive, our investment in these students' nutrition helps ensure a healthier future for our community.”
“Our families appreciate the food donations each week and not only does it help families with the cost of groceries, but it also offers us an opportunity to interact and connect with our students and their families,” says Ms. Krista Sego, Principal, Greystone Heights School.
Canpotex has been a supporter of the WIN program since 2017 and, to date, has contributed over $200,000 in support of student nutrition by providing weekend hampers throughout the school year to, in total, 215 students at 8 different schools throughout Saskatoon. With this new donation, Canpotex will enable The Salvation Army to increase its reach annually to 70 students at 11 different schools in Saskatoon beginning in 2024, which is an additional 25 students per year at 3 additional schools compared to the previous year’s numbers.
As part of its contribution, Canpotex employees will volunteer at the WIN program as well as other Salvation Army school food programs and events such as the annual Christmas kettle campaign.
